Founded in 1974, New Horizons Academy is a licensed, private, non-profit, alternative day school. New Horizons Academy plans to construct a net-zero resource use, state-of-the-art campus featuring the latest in energy and environmentally responsible architecture and technology that will seek to achieve LEED(r) Platinum certification. Named The Energy Education Station, the emphasis will be on education and demonstration.
The mission of NHA's Energy Education Station is to promote an energy conscious and educated southern Nevada by constructing the new green campus as a "living, learning laboratory" an energy and environmental demonstration for students, educators, business, government and community leaders.
New Horizons Academy is the very first school in the State of Nevada to register under USGBC's LEED for Schools and the first K-12 school in the Las Vegas city limits to register its intent to seek LEED certification.
Once NHA's 35,000 sf green building is in operation (Summer 2009), a fully integrated Building Control System will measure the buildings water and energy savings and energy production. The New Horizon's website will show live data on a 24 hour basis as to the building's performance.
